Retina South Africa
Retina South Africa is a non profit organisation fighting blindness especially blindness caused by genetic eye disorders.
The cure for genetic eye disorders will be gene specific and to determine the mutant gene, blood samples need to be taken; DNA extraction done and then gene tracking to find the mutant gene. We raise funds to cover the costs
Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), Macular Degeneration (MD), Usher Syndrome and over 200 retinal degenerative diseases are at present considered incurable and lead to blindness. New research indicates that as many as one in 5 people may be carriers of gene mutations for retinal conditions - a staggering 9 million South Africans and is the major cause of inherited blindness.
What are we doing for the sight handicapped in South Africa?
Both at National and branch level patient support officers serve an important role in keeping our members informed of the latest research, through regular e-news and branch news-letters. We also offer advice and counselling on coping with low vision and information on risk factors such as smoking, UV exposure and dietary supplements that may slow vision loss. Regular blood clinics are held to ensure that the DNA from designated patients are included in the gene tracking project.
We are proud of the fact that our branches are managed by volunteers, thereby resulting in a more effective use of our donor funds.
Some of our fundraising activities: Fun Run / Walk at Rooihuiskraal Historical Grounds on 1st May 2010; distribution of Casual Day Stickers, 3rd September 2010 and a Golf Day later during the year

IMISEBEYELANGA SERVICES
About us
Imisebeyelanga services started in 2004. It was very evident that there was a huge need for trained Home and Community Based Careworkers in different skills programmes such as Home Based Care, Early Childhood Development, HIV/AIDS, Breaking the Cycle of Child Abuse, Life Skills, Leadership training and Management training.
We offered Home Based Care training programmes Siyabuswa and Ga-Mmotla in 2006, funded by National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund. In 2007, we joined in partnership with The Infant Trust. They funded our training programme for Home Based Care, Early Childhood Development and Child Abuse.
In 2008, Department of Sport, Arts, Recreation and Culture came on board with funding our HIV Peer Education Programmes.
In 2009 we achieved full accreditation with Health & Welfare SETA.

- Organizational Development Programme:
- The second part that we focus on is the development of emerging NGO’s from rural and impoverished areas. This include activities such as capacity building, management training, forum meetings, renovation of structures, access to audited financial statements, good governance practices, fundraising and sound financial systems.
- We offer assistance in problem areas and do not manage the organizations on their behalf. They maintain their own identity, although progress is closely monitored by a volunteer social worker.
- Poverty Alleviation:
- Imisebeyelanga Services acts as a collection and distribution point for food and clothes and other donations which are then to organizations in need.
- We are currently actively involved with Mogodu Children’s Home in Ratjiepane where Friends of Imisebeyelanga joined hands with us and we are in the process of renovating their entire infra-structure. The Friends, together with Infant Trust (UK) are also involved in securing food for the Home on a monthly basis
- The umbrella objective of Imisebeyelanga Services is to improve the lives of people in need.
